Me to We: Finding Meaning in a Material World

“Imagine waking up every morning believing that your actions can make a significant change in the world.”

Mothers and fathers have been saying it to selfish children for generations: “The world doesn’t revolve around you.”

And yet, it does.

Craig and Marc Kielburger learned at a young age something that takes most of us decades to learn: the world revolves around us only in that it needs us to make it the best it can be. And, in a happy twist of fate, when we forget about ourselves and build a life around helping others, we end up creating happiness for ourselves.

“In life, we are told that easy answers are hard to come by. Many believe that they simply don’t exist. We respectfully disagree.”                —Craig and Marc Kielburger

Me to We encourages people to adopt the Me to We philosophy, a way to feed the positive in the world “one action, one act of faith, one small step at a time.” Through gratitude and  empathy, we move beyond a Me mentality to an awareness of We. Along the way, we redefine what it means to be community, and uncover an unexpected kind of happiness.

“They die one at a time, so I save them one at a time.” — Mother Teresa

The book contains the inspirational personal stories of the Kielburger brothers (founders of Free the Children), Oprah Winfrey, Jane Goodall, Desmond Tutu, and others who have worked to transform the lives of others in a positive way. It’s also a recipe for a new world, with prompts to create projects for your own life, your family and your community.

“. . . true fulfillment starts with finding the courage to reach out.”

I keep Post-it page markers at hand when I read, and when I find a passage to remember, I place a Post-it sticky marker on the line. A quick glance at my library shelves reveals which books affected me the most. When I was reading this book, my daughter said, “There sure are a lot of Post-its in that book.” Me to We is a many Post-it book. I marked notable quotes, inspirational stories, helpful suggestions and references to other books I would like to read. This book inspired me from start to finish. It could do the same for you, and if you buy it, you will help Free the Children since all profits from the book go to that organization.

Me to We is more than a book. It’s also a movement to promote changeThrough international volunteer trips, leadership training programs and inspirational speakers, Me to We encourages better choices for a better world. A We Day event will be held in Ottawa on April 29, 2013.

Me to We is a book to pull off the shelf when discouragement creeps in. It’s a book to turn to for new ideas and inspiration. It’s a book to keep and read again and again.
